On 8 June, Relais & Châteaux is holding an event to help protect the biodiversity of the oceans and culinary heritage.
Faustino Gran is joining this initiative to prove its commitment to protecting the nature around it. The sea and marine species are part of the culture of Menorca; fishing, food, and the character of its people are all firmly rooted in the island.
Relais & Châteaux is an association of leading professionals from around the world who work internationally but emphasise the local, protecting its biodiversity and food heritage. It’s our responsibility to invent the new cuisines of the future by, for example, looking to the sea that literally surrounds us.
Relais & Châteaux is supporting the international celebration of World Ocean Day for a further year. How? By respecting the seasonal nature of life in our seas, avoiding fishing in seasons that are essential to species’ life cycles and committing to the consumption of sustainable marine products under the slogan #SEAsonality.
SEAsonality
Using seasonal produce is something that people are now aware of when they consume food from the land but the seasons have an impact on the sea too. Fish, crustaceans and molluscs all reproduce at specific times of year, depending on the species and their habitat. The World Oceans Day campaign aims to highlight the seasonality of marine species, which affects when they lay eggs, raise their young and regroup, with a commitment to sustainable consumption under the slogan #SEAsonality. ‘Seasonal’ doesn’t always mean sustainable, so it’s important to respect species’ seasonal life cycles and refrain from consuming them during certain periods.
World Oceans Day
The United Nations has echoed the poor health of our oceans. It emphasised this issue in the speech Planet Ocean, the Seas are Changing:
“The ocean covers most of the Earth, and only a small percentage of its waters have been explored. Despite the total faith humanity places in it, and considering the enormous influence it has on our lives, the ocean only receives a fragment of our attention and resources. It’s time to put the ocean first!”
Faustino Gran joins the movement
To raise our clients’ awareness of the importance of protecting the oceans and marine life, they are invited to come and discover new dishes and collaborate in a good cause at the same time.
We’ve prepared a special menu for the occasion based on seasonal, sustainable and local produce from the sea, such as Minorcan red prawns and red sea bream. The World Oceans Day menu will be available at Restaurante Faustino for anyone who would like to join us in celebrating this day.
